Katy ISD Calls for Bond Election

On Wednesday, August 18, the board of trustees for the Katy Independent School District in Katy, Tx called for a Tuesday, November 2 bond election at the school board meeting.

$459.7 million was the total that the 2010 bond package recommended to the board.

Three new elementary schools, on junior high and one high school were apart of the proposed package.

The package is divided into four parts, $119 million for renovation of existing facilities, $282 million for new schools, $35 million for technology and $22 million for other items.

Judy Snyder, President of the Katy ISD Board of Trustees, stated “We are very appreciative of the dedication and hard work from the School Facility Referendum Planning Task Force."

She added, “Having thoroughly reviewed this plan, we (the Board of Trustees) feel that the Task Force has clearly outlined a package that the voters can decide on this fall.”

Over the next two years, the tax rate is not scheduled to increase, but is scheduled to increase 1 cent in 2012 and 3 cents for 2013 and 2014 tax years.

After 2014, the tax rate is scheduled to decrease.

Board member Eric Duhon stated, “This is one of the most critical things this board has to do, and that’s for us to decide to spend tax payer money at this magnitude."

He added, “I know it doesn’t come easy to any of us when we look at this and know we are committing tax payers to pay these bonds back.”

Katy Hospital Offering Free Screenings to Youth

Several adolescents and young adults die from sudden cardiac arrest each year.

It is often associated with an undetected heart condition that is aggravated by physical activity or sports when sudden cardiac death occurs in a young person.

Memorial Hermann Katy in Katy, Tx is scheduled to be screening adolescents and young adults for underlying congenital cardiac abnormalities that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest on Saturday, August 28.

Katy Freeway Project Starts at I-10, Texas 99

In Katy, Tx, the Texas Department of Transportation has started work near the intersection of I-10 and Texas 99.

A Texas Department of Transportation contractor has started constructing the foundations for bridge columns to support two ramps that are scheduled to connect Texas 99 and Interstate 10.

According to Patricia Waskowiak, transportation program manager for Houston-Galveston Area Council, on Texas 99, the ramps are northbound to eastbound on I-10 and westbound on I-10 to southbound on Texas 99, the two most congested directions during the peak period.

On Thursday, April 29, the Texas Transportation Commission awarded the project to Lone Star Construction Co., stated Karen D. Othon, public information officer, Houston District of TxDOT.

She added, "The $29.1 million project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Economic Stimulus) and is estimated to take 18 months to complete."

That funding for the remaining ramps has not yet been identified, according to Waskowiak.

The scheduled opening of the two funded ramps is December 2011, Othon stated.

She added, the addition of these ramps is expected to improve the flow and mobility of traffic traveling through the intersection, allowing traffic to bypass the signalized intersection.

Firethorne Names Katie Sparkman Community HOA Manager

Our willingness to look at receivables and beyond traditional income streams makes us very approachable and competitive for entrepreneurs and small- to mid-cap businesses seeking loans."

Green Bank has assets of about an estimated $667 million.

The lender added, non-performing loans and foreclosed real estate represent less than one percent of its total assets.

The bank, in keeping with its name, claims to have a strong focus on environmentally and financially responsible products and solutions for local consumers and businesses.

According to this story, designed by architect Paul van der Wal, the bank's main building was among the first in Houston, Tx to achieve gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The building is powered by renewable energy and uses sustainable materials.

Free Katy Immunizations Planned

Katy’s Christus St. Catherine Hospital in Katy, Tx has joined forces with lead sponsor of the Care Van Program, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

The two joined up together in order to provide free immunizations to children between 2-18 years of age.

The Care Van is scheduled to be providing immunizations on Monday, August 16 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, located at 5356 11th Street in Katy.

A copy of his or her shot record and/or a letter from the school is set to need to be presented, before a child can receive an immunization.

Christus St. Catherine Hospital is scheduled to be providing nurses to help with the event, including providing parents with specific information when they arrive.

Where volunteers drive mobile immunization units to provide access to the medically underserved, the Care Van Program is a child immunization program.

The program collaborates with local Katy communities to give free immunizations to Texas children.

Katy’s Main Street HEB Scheduled to Open

For the opening of the new Katy, Tx HEB grocery store, the date has been set, Saturday, August 14.

The store is located on the south-side of I-10 at the intersection of Pin Oak and I-10.

With HEB as the anchor store, the Katy Main Street project is being developed by Woodcreek Development Company.

It is scheduled to eventually feature restaurants, retail shops, hotel, banks and office space.

The first business to open was a Walgreen’s drugstore.

A tentative opening date of Wednesday, July 21 has been given to the HEB gas station.

In the Katy area, there are three other HEB grocery stores.

Locations can be found at Highland Knolls at Mason Road; Fry Blvd. at the Grand Parkway; and I-10 at Fry Road.

Lone Star College-Cypress to Begin Satellite Center in Katy Area

Lone Star College-Cypress in Cypress, Tx is scheduled to serve as a satellite to the larger Lone Star College-Cy-Fair near Katy, Tx.

The Lone Star College System is set to begin building a full-service satellite college center near the border that separates the Katy and Cypress-Fairbanks independent school districts on Clay Road.

The 83,000-square-foot Lone Star College-Cypress Center located at 19710 Clay is scheduled to serve as a satellite to the bigger Lone Star College-Cy-Fair, which is at the corner of Barker-Cypress and West roads.

Cypress Center is necessary because they are running out of space at the 450,000-square-foot Lone Star College-Cy-Fair College campus, according to College system officials.

Between that campus and the Fairbanks satellite center at U.S. 290 and West Little York Road, the college’s student population has reached 15,000.

According to Kelly Norton, college spokeswoman, Katy-area students represented 11.8 percent of that enrollment.

On Monday, June 28, a group converged on the cleared 11-acre Cypress Center site to break ground on the project.

For the $14 million project, C.F. Jordan Construction is the general contractor.

In fall 2011, Cypress Center is set to open and would be constructed to accommodate an estimated 3,000 students.

The two-story building is scheduled to feature a 13,500-square-foot workforce lab area, eight computer labs, 14 classrooms, two training rooms, one craft lab, one biology lab and a student services area with testing, tutoring, registration and bookstore services as well as staff, administrative and faculty offices.

The workforce lab will be home to the drafting, welding, electronics, mechatronics, machining and Geographic Information Systems programs.

For the Cypress Center campus, the Lone Star College System set aside $19.7 million in its 2008 bond plan.

In the college system’s May 2008 election, voters approved $420 million, and a total of $95.5 million was allocated to projects at the Cy-Fair College campus.

Accommodating up to 18,000 students, a third project is set to add 1,100 parking spaces.

At a cost of $9.5 million, a future bond project will add 30,000-square-feet to the existing student services building.
